Come release on Xbox One, I was excited to get stuck in, and boy, do I wish I could erase my memory and go at the entire game all over again. Once it was announced, a swift bit of research shown me that this was a massively acclaimed platformer that had previously released elsewhere. Before A Hat in Time was announced for Xbox One, I hadn’t even heard of it. It helps, of course, that its 30s-esque cartoon style is stunning to behold from start to end. It’s one of the most challenging platformers I have ever played, but easily the most rewarding, too. This is a game that will bring you to your knees for hours at a time before you eventually suss out the perfect motion to overcome whatever tough level or boss has stood in your way. Cuphead instills that age old feeling of if at first you don’t succeed, try and try again.
Though, I wouldn’t have it any other way. If there’s one game on this list you should go for, make it Ori.Ĭuphead, you ridiculously difficult game you. Moon Studio’s wonderful design of not only the game’s puzzles and platforming sections, but its visuals and its audio, collectively goes hand in glove to produce one of the most distinct and compelling platformers of the decade. What makes Ori and the Blind Forest so special is its ability to relay such a heart warming story without ever uttering a single word. Ori was always going to take top spot here, and quite fittingly too, given that the sequel is well under way. So without further ado, let’s get stuck in.
